Wes Perry, MM

Instructor of Jazz Saxophone

Wes Perry is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator based in Long Beach, CA. Though primarily a saxophonist, Wes has also performed on clarinet, flute, oboe and keyboards. Wes earned his bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from The Ohio State University in 2015. He studied saxophone with Shawn “Thunder” Wallace and was a five-year member of the OSU Jazz Ensemble. During his time at OSU, Wes established a presence as an in-demand saxophonist, playing and recording with a variety of groups, from big bands, to hip-hop groups, to rock bands. He was selected to be a member of the JECO Intercollegiate Jazz Ensemble two years in a row and was a member of the 2014 Disneyland All-American College Band. In addition to keeping a busy performance schedule, Wes served as an instructor at the Jazz Academy, run by the Jazz Arts Group of Columbus, along with teaching private lessons.

Shortly after his graduation from Ohio State, Wes moved to California in order to pursue a master's degree in Jazz Studies at California State University, Long Beach. There, he studied saxophone with Sal Lozano, and performed in many ensembles, including the award-winning Concert Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Jeff Jarvis. During his time in that group, Wes was named a two-time Outstanding Soloist at the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival (2016 and 2017). Since moving to Southern California, Wes maintains an active schedule as a freelance musician and educator, including playing regularly with the San Diego based big band, Gaslamp Quarter Jazz Orchestra and reggae band Arise Roots. He also maintains a private lessons studio and is excited to be a teaching artist for the SoCal Jazz Academy.

Wes has performed with Wayne Bergeron, John Clayton, Sal Lozano, The Cab Calloway Orchestra, Delfeayo Marsalis, Tribal Seeds, The Original Wailers, Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra and many others.
